Women work on annual clothing giveaway

For the sixth year, a group of women is gathering together to fill two large trailers with clothing to give away to the community.

Starting Monday, a group of about 15 women will be working all week to sort through donated clothing — including a lot leftover from school lost and founds — that will then be available for people to take during giveaways 3-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and 8 a.m.-noon Aug. 3 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Seventh Street.

“All of us look forward to this week of work,” organizer Chris Jeide said.

She said the timing of it late in the summer is meant to help families with back-to-school shopping. None of the items are sold or auctioned.

“It’s not a needs-based thing, it’s an everybody come, refresh your wardrobe, find your lost and found, find a new love,” Jeide said. “It’s a wonderful thing.”

She said the event is not meant to promote anything and is not religious, it’s just that the church agreed to provide the space for Jeide to park her two trailers filled with clothes.

As the women sort through the clothes, she said their children are often doing their best to undo the progress by dressing up in clothes or getting to a high point to jump into a pile of clothes, but it’s all part of the fun. She said they even have a way to reuse stained shirts — they’re donated to a local mechanic.
