Wings ‘N Wheels returns to Powell Muncipal Airport

The Wings ‘N Wheels event will return to the Powell Municipal Airport this Saturday, Aug. 20. This will be the first time the event is held since 2018, and this year organizers are adding drag races down the runway.

Prior to the races, they’re having a fly-in, and that will be followed by an air and car show. Local aerobatic pilot Dick Fennell will do some spins and loops for people to see. There will be a fly over by a North American T-6 Texan, a World War II fighter plane, and local ag pilot Brett Bush is also going to do some water sprays.

Classic car enthusiasts will be showing off their rides during the car show.

After the pilots are done with the runway, the drag races will start. They’re expecting a hundred or more participants.

“We have people coming from all over the Big Horn Basin and Red Lodge, Sydney, and Billings, Montana,” said Ron Asay, who is helping organize the event.

Racers are going to sign up the day of the event. They will need to pass a tech inspection. The organizers are going to have a few mechanics on hand to check brakes, seat belts, and the basic safety of the vehicle.

“We just got this thing rolling, and we want to make sure everyone is safe and has a great time,” said Mike Martin, another organizer of the event.

Martin added that the race coordinators have a preference for slick tires, but it depends on who signs up.

Gates will open at 6:30 a.m. and the car show will begin at 9 a.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and kids under 12 get in for free.
