Wings N' Wheels in Powell next week

Airplanes and automobiles will fill the Powell Municipal Airport next week for the 13th Wings ‘N' Wheels air show next week.

The show kicks off on Friday, Aug. 14, with a variety of activities at the car show. It continues through Saturday morning with the fly-in, skydivers, helicopter and plane rides and demonstrations of remote control aircraft.

This year's show will be highlighted by two air shows, Gary Rower Vintage Airshows and Kelly Pietrowicz, the Flying Babe. They will fly a twilight show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with the main air show taking place at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Friday's activities include a Rod Run to the Top of The World in the Beartooth Mountains, an afternoon poker walk, an evening poker walk and restaurant crawl in downtown Powell from 4:30-7 p.m.

The Twilight Air Show will coincide with an ice-cream social, and a drive-in movie is scheduled at the American Dream Theater at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday's fly-in begins at 7 a.m., and an early breakfast will be served. Cars and planes will be on display, and hobbyists will demonstrate remote-control aircraft. Airplane and helicopter rides will be available during the day and food and vendor booths will be open.

Spectators should make sure they arrive prior to 10 a.m. when the aerial acrobatics show begins. An opening ceremony featuring skydivers bringing in the American flag is planned.

Car show prizes will be announced at 1 p.m.

Gary Rower of Vintage Airshows is returning to Wings ‘N' Wheels after appearing two years ago with his MCMD Stearman, a 1942 Army training airplane. The plane is powered by a 450-horsepower radial engine, giving it more than twice the craft's original horsepower.

Rower is a former Air Force F-16 instructor and has flown all over the world. He is rated to fly several models of Boeing commercial jets and is a certified flight instructor.

Pietrowicz is a former police officer who earned her pilot's license in 1996. A ride she purchased in a silent auction introduced her to aerobatics and she gave up her police career to dedicate her time to training. She performed her first aerobatic show three years ago and two years ago met the requirements to perform as low as 250 feet.

Pietrowicz performs in a Pitts S2C biplane.

The air shows will fly in memory of Gary Miller, a Colorado pilot killed last month while practicing near Denver. Miller was to have been the third act at Wings ‘N' Wheels.

Wings ‘N' Wheels is sponsored by Powell Valley Chamber of Commerce.
