The Mountain West Conference announced its 2023-24 Scholar-Athlete Team on Wednesday. The University of Wyoming had 132 student-athletes recognized.
The Wyoming women’s swimming and diving team led the way with 23 honorees. The remaining 102 Cowboys and Cowgirls included 15 from women’s soccer. Both the football and women’s cross-country teams had 13 representatives. Women’s track and field had 12 student-athletes with women’s basketball right behind at 10. Others included nine from men’s cross country, eight from volleyball, five from women’s golf and four from men’s golf with three from men’s basketball and two from tennis.
In order to qualify, the individual must have completed two semesters or three quarters at their school and have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
A recent graduate from Powell High School found his way onto the MWC Scholar-Athlete Team, as Jay Cox was recognized for his academics in computer engineering.
He set the University of Wyoming school record in the indoor 400 meters in 2023, running a 47.46 in January. Cox is also fifth in school history in the indoor 200 meters with a 21.46 which he ran this year.
He sits third in school history in the outdoor 200 meters with a 21.25 and fifth all-time in the 400 meters with a 47.18.
Cox graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering in May.
