‘The Scout’ 100th dedication anniversary July 4

The Scout, a monumental tribute commissioned after the 1917 death of William F. ‘Buffalo Bill’ Cody, and created by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, sculptor and arts patron from New York, was dedicated in 1924, depicting the Western figure as an army scout, peering down a trail signaling troops to follow. CODY — The public is invited to join with the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce, Buffalo Bill Center of the West, and Cody Stampede Parade Committee and Outriders to rededicate “The Scout” monument.

The 30-minute celebration will begin at noon on July 4 at the base of the statue. Cake and light refreshments will be served for all in attendance. The event is open to the public — all are invited to gather and witness this milestone in the beloved memorial’s history.

Plans for the ceremony include short speeches by Mayor Matt Hall and representatives from the Cody Country Chamber of Commerce and Buffalo Bill Center of the West. The Stampede Parade Outriders will then perform their traditional ride over the monument, and officials will rededicate the statue for the next 100 years.

The iconic bronze monument, created by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, is located on a hill between the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and West Park Hospital and was originally dedicated on July 4, 1924.

The statue memorializes Buffalo Bill’s pioneering spirit and visionary contribution to the founding and early years of Cody. Now a permanent piece of the Whitney Western Art Museum’s collection, the memorial has become a Cody icon and popular photo location for visitors and locals alike.
