Tennis camp brings week of competition

Rackets swung furiously through the morning and into the afternoon at Powell High School during last week’s tennis camp, bringing nearly 50 kids out to compete for five days on the tennis courts.

“It’s great to have a good number of kids out competing,” coach Joe Asay said.

Athletes in attendance ranged from middle schoolers to high school seniors, allowing athletes from Powell and Cody to compete against each other while being coached by both coaching staffs.

“This week-long camp is more drill focused so we don’t do a lot of mechanical work,” Asay said. “Having 49 kids on five courts we tried to put them on courts matching up their skill levels and being able to put a coach on each of those courts was key.”

The camp primarily focused on drills and was capped off with match play Friday.

Asay said kids have a lot of opportunities to get out and compete over the summer in different sports whether it be through camps or practicing on their own and he was glad that nearly 50 athletes decided to compete in tennis for a week.

The high school competitive season is fast approaching, with the first tennis practices set for Aug. 7 and the first competitions set to take place for Powell in Gillette on Aug. 17, Asay is hopeful his players will continue to get out and practice over the coming weeks.

“There’s a number of things they can practice,” Asay said. “It’s always more fun to get out there with a buddy to hit. We are so close to the start of the high school season and I hope that they continue to get out and keep playing.”
