Swim and dive win Gene Dozah

After back-to-back days of competition, welcoming the defending state co-champions alongside six other teams to Powell, the Panther girls’ swim team left unscathed — winning the Worland Quint and Gene Dozah Invitational.

WORLAND QUINT

Powell started the weekend out on the road, making the trip to Worland to take part in the Worland Quint against Worland, Sublette County, Buffalo and Newcastle.

The Panthers ran away with the team competition, scoring 409 points, 241 ahead of second place Worland.

Overall the Panthers won seven of the 12 events, including two of the three relays.

Emma Mitchell was the only Panther to win two events, winning the 100 free in 28.7 and the 100 back in 1:05.1.

Kik Hayano won the 200 medley in a time of 2:30.66.

Gabby Paterson won the 500 free with a personal best time of 5:53. In the 500 free the Panthers placed four of the top eight swimmers, including three of the top four.

Grace Sapp was the final individual winner in the 100 breast with a 1:20.6.

The 200 medley relay team of Patricia Christensen, Paterson, Sapp and Mitchell won in a time of 2:03.4.

The 400 free relay of Hayano, Paterson, Mitchell and Sapp won in a time of 4:02.7.

GENE DOZAH

Coming home to swim for the first time this season, the Panther girls’ swim team hosted the Gene Dozah Invitational, bringing in seven teams from around the state — including defending state co-champions Green River.

“Green River provides strong competition enabling our athletes to swim faster and dive better,” Panther swim coach Bob Smartt said. “The physics of the bow wave helps one to swim faster when there are faster athletes in the adjacent lanes.”

Green River led after nine events, but Powell snuck ahead of Green River in the final three events to win with 358 points to 329 for the Wolves.

The 100 back helped push the Panthers forward, scoring 48 points as a team when Sapp placed first, Christensen placed second, Addy Powell placed third, Kate Miller took seventh and Cassidy Reimer placed 12th.

The Panthers also earned 42 points in the 100 breast via Mitchell’s second place finish, Kathryn Brence placing third, Aubree Fisher fifth and Brinly Casey ninth.

Mitchell achieved a new ranking on the Panther Wall of Fame, swimming to a 25.77 in the 50 free to move into fourth place all time in PHS history.

Paterson had the other individual victory, winning the 100 free in a time of 59.52.

The 200 medley relay of Sapp, Mitchell, Thomas and Powell won in a time of 2:01.19.

ROAD TRIPS

Powell now heads back out on the road again, heading to Worland first at 5 p.m. Thursday to take part in a dual.

The Panthers then head to Riverton at 3 p.m. Friday to take part in an invitational.

“We need to focus on our turns, streamlines and underwater kicking skills,” Smartt said. “We will be swimming off events this week, saving our athletes top events for the three big invitational meets coming in future weeks at Worland, Douglas and Buffalo.”
