With subzero temperatures in the forecast, Park County School District 1 is planning to either delay or cancel school on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service is predicting a low of minus 10 degrees on Tuesday night in Powell, followed by high of 2 degrees and a low of minus 25 on Wednesday. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder.
“This all combined may cause brutally unsafe conditions with wind chills ranging from [minus] 35 to [minus] 55 degrees,” Superintendent Jay Curtis said in a Monday announcement. “It’s pretty bad when the best-case scenarios are [minus] 35 with the wind chill!”
As a result of the weather, the start of school will at least be delayed by two hours on Wednesday morning and may be canceled; Curtis said the district would make a final decision today (Tuesday) and stay in communication with parents about any weather-related changes.
