Stenerson enjoys Shrine Bowl experience

Top talent from around Wyoming converged on Casper last week, as the 51st annual Shrine Bowl saw a resounding victory by the North squad 45-7 which included Powell’s Trey Stenerson as a receiver.

“It was a pretty great experience getting to have that opportunity to go down there and play one last high school game and play with a lot of new teammates,” Stenerson said. “It was an all-around good experience.”

Stenerson and the North squad gelled quickly, helping the team come together for the victory despite an elevated level of intensity in practices throughout the week.

“I think we clicked a lot. Practices were a little more intense, but I feel we clicked and did well in those practices,” Stenerson said. “Going down there and playing some better competition definitely prepared me for the college level.”

The Chadron State College signee showed off his skills in the game on Saturday, recording three receptions for 37 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter from Sheridan’s Dom Bennettini for the final touchdown.

Along with the experience of playing with a new team and playing against some of the best competition in the state, the Shrine Bowl brings about another important experience as the entire week is also dedicated to helping raise money for the Shriners Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

“It was pretty cool to catch a touchdown, have the auction and raise some money for those kids,” he said.

During the week, athletes are taken  to Salt Lake to visit with children in the hospital and understand the struggles  they go through each and every day.

“I think that was super important. That’s the whole reason we do this week is to kind of see the struggles and stuff they go through. That’s a way we show our support, is with the football game,” Stenerson said.

Now that he’s returned home to a summer playing with the Pioneers before leaving in the fall for Chadron, Nebraska, he said it is an experience that will last him a lifetime.

“I think it’s a life-long experience and opportunity. Getting to take that down to Chadron, that’s something cool that I can remember for life,” Stenerson said.
