Prior to her first year as head coach of the Powell Panther volleyball team, Lesli Spencer decided to put on a “Can U Dig It” volleyball match to raise funds for the Powell Athletic Roundtable against Powell Valley Healthcare (PVHC).
With the event now heading into its second year, the teams from PHS and PVHC took to the court again on July 6 to raise more funds for local athletes.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors from this year’s upcoming Panther volleyball squad came out to participate in multiple 25-point games against PVHC.
Spencer said the high school athletes were broken up by grade, and each team had the opportunity to play the hospital.
Unfortunately, the second year of the event had a smaller attendance than last year but was still able to bring in almost $600 for Panther athletes.
Heading into the third year of the fundraiser, Spencer hopes the event will take a jump and become a strong annual fundraiser in the summer for the athletic roundtable.
“We would really like to have more support,” she said. “The hospital provides a great meal, and all proceeds go to the athletes at PHS. They also have a drawing for a chance to win cash by serving the ball into a target.”
The high school volleyball team will have its first practice on Aug. 15 and first competition shortly after – on Aug. 26 at a tournament in Riverton.
