Additional changes in April meeting

The shot clock is set to begin in Wyoming in the 2026-27 season now for all classes, after the Wyoming High School Activities Association approved an additional action in April.

Originally, the shot clock was only set to be approved for the 3A and 4A classes after second approval back in November, but in February and April a second motion was brought up that approved the use of a shot clock in 1A and 2A classes starting in the same season.

With that decision, the use of a 35-second shot clock will come to all classes, which should clear any confusion that could have happened in a game between a higher and a lower class team had the shot clock remained solely a 3A/4A practice.

An additional rule change that came at the meeting in April by the WHSAA will impact wrestling at the high school level. With the recent explosion of girls wrestling in Wyoming, the association determined girls will no longer be allowed to wrestle boys during the regular season starting in the 2024-25 season.

A motion to suspend the two-reading procedure regarding a rule was approved, which allowed for the WHSAA to strike two rules from the handbook.

The first of those, 7.17.5, reads that “girls will be allowed to wrestle against boys during the regular season. WHSAA Mixed Gender Waiver 5.0.8 will be required for girls to participate against boys during the regular season.”

Striking that passage made rule 7.17.92 redundant, as it states that “only girls vs. girls matches will be counted towards seeding.”

Another key change coming to high school sports next year will be the shifting of the indoor track state schedule.

The approved change will see the indoor track meet move towards a similar schedule of state swimming, splitting up 3A and 4A competition over three days as opposed to two.

That will see one class compete on Thursday and complete finals Friday morning before the other class will compete Friday afternoon and wrap up competition on Saturday.

Additional changes included at the WHSAA meeting will allow for golf teams to have up to three coaches as long as they are approved by the schools, while Guernsey-Sunrise was approved to have a 2A golf program starting in the fall.

The meeting noted that 69 people inquired about becoming an official, 18 completed registration to become an official while an additional 10 had started the process, with the WHSAA continuing to seek new officials due to a shortage in recent years.
