Series on environmental awareness starts Thursday

A four-week series about sustainability and environmental awareness will be offered Thursdays, Jan. 18 to Feb. 8, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cody.

Billed “Winter Education: Earth Care & Faith,” the free programs will run 6-7:30 p.m. and include a simple soup supper in the Parish Hall at 825 Simpson Ave. The sessions are sponsored by the church’s Earth Team.

“We’re inviting the community to listen to and participate in conversations and activities associated with environmental issues and led by representatives from the fields of universities, agriculture and municipalities,” member Marshall Dominick said. “We’ve designed the programs to be both inspirational and educational.”

The dates, topics and leaders are:

Jan. 18: Introduction to Computer Modeling with hands-on demonstrations on an En-ROADS climate simulator created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, led by Mary Keller, climate activist and PhD theologian.

Jan. 25:  Local Farming, led by Scott Richard, soil composition specialist and owner/operator of Shoshone River Farms/Community Supported Agriculture, and Rod Morrison, organic farmer.

Feb. 1: The Impact of Climate Change on the Greater Yellowstone Region, led by Corinne Noel Knapp, assistant professor at the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming.

Feb. 8: The Red Lodge Story: Saving Costs and the Environment, led by Cory Thompson, a Red Lodge City Council member who was involved in the preparation of the town’s study and report, “City of Red Lodge Baseline Assessment,” which resulted in initiatives to lower energy use and improve the town’s sustainability.

The goal of the Earth Team, formed in 2021, is to improve stewardship in local communities by providing educational forums and exchanges of information that is pertinent to practical ways for improving the care of the Earth. Its current focus is on renewable energies, reduction of waste, recycling, and food production and economy.
