September happenings at the library

The original Powell Library is being demolished. While we know the old library held wonderful memories, the building had major issues that warranted it not being remodeled but built new. We look forward to watching the construction and creating new memories. 

September means National Library Card Sign Up Month at the Park County libraries. We are pleased to announce a new limited-edition library card available for all. This new wonderful card features Snoopy, so if you don’t have a library card, make sure to stop by and get one. 

All Park County libraries will also be participating in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge as we celebrate the 80th birthday of this iconic mascot. Stop by the library and sign up to help celebrate the birthday of Smokey Bear.   

The Powell Library will be celebrating with Smokey Bear at the Storywalk at Homesteader Park on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. Join us for this special Story Time with Smokey Bear with a new StoryWalk Book. 

Park County libraries will once again be celebrating National Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 17, which we will be celebrating all week. So, make sure and stop by any of our three libraries the week of Sept. 16-21 to pick up a free pocket sized copy of the U.S. Constitution and check out a book from our patriotic book displays. 

Come to the Park County Library for Craft Time for all ages on Friday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. to make Cork Fairy Houses. Have fun painting fairy houses on champagne corks.   

Powell Library will be hosting a Hosta Exchange from Monday, Sept. 9 to Saturday, Sept. 14. This is a wonderful chance to bring in your extra bulbs, divides, and tuberous roots to share and a great chance to take some home. Stop by our seed library and enter into a chance to win a garden starting kit.

Do you have questions about the Libby App and how to download books from the library; then join us on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. for a fun library 101 presentation on how to use the Libby App.          

Powell Library is offering three different book discussions for all your literary tastes.All book discussions meet at the Homesteader Hall meeting room. Tuesday Afternoon Book Discussion meets on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. where we will be discussing “Red Sky Over Hawaii” by Sara Ackerman. Join us for our new Fiction to Film Book Discussion on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m. to receive your copy of “The Green Mile” by Stephen King. Our evening book discussion will be meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 24 to discuss “Unbroken” By Laura Hillenbrand and “Don’t Give Up, Don’t Give In,” By Louis Zamperini. 

Join us for Family History Friday on Sept. 13, sign up for a free, one-on-one, hour-long session with Larry and Maureen Akin. 

Join us for Adult Craft Night on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. under the grandstand at the fairgrounds for a flower pounding craft.          

Powell Library is offering Tech Tuesday with Chris, sign up for a one-on-one session with the Park County Library IT administrator who can help you with your device problems. Tech Tuesday will be on Sept. 24, sign ups required.    

Powell Library is pleased to have Josh Pomeroy of Blue Ribbon Tree Service present on how to prepare your trees for the winter. Join us Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. for this educational program.  

Bring the kids to the Powell Library for our wonderful children’s programming. We will have Baby/Toddler Time every Monday at 10:30 a.m. and Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. Join us for a special Storytime Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at the Storywalk at Homesteader Park with Smokey Bear. Join us Wednesday, Sept. 4, Sept. 18 and Sept. 25 for Storytime at 10:30 a.m.  

Sign up to Read to a Dog on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 3-4:15 p.m. We will be offering a Homeschool Hour on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2 p.m., join us for reading and crafts. Parents remember we have Early Literacy Kits as well as Tonies for checkout. 

Teens come to the library on Friday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. to make Dragon Eggs and join us on Friday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. for Nintendo Switch Game Day.            

All Park County Libraries will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 17 for staff training.
