School board positions attract ten candidates

Posted

Out of 37 candidates filed for trustee positions in seven special districts in the area as of Aug. 26, nearly a third are running for just four seats on the Park County School District 1 board.

Trace Paul, sitting vice chairman of the school board, is running for reelection, as well as trustee Lillian Brazelton.

Also running are Jennifer Franks, Aida Polson, Rich Stearns, Zachary Opps, Dustin T. Paul, Laurie Larsen, Daniel Morrow and Joni Bennett.

Greg Borcher and Don Hansen are stepping back and not running for their seats on the school board.

Candidate filings were final Aug. 29 in the school district election, as well as in other special districts on the ballot for the general election Nov. 8.

In the Northwest College District, three incumbents seek to retain their places.

Dusty Spomer and Carolyn Danko have served two terms on the college board and are running for reelection to represent Powell sub-district A. They are challenged by Mallory Riley and Emily Hart. Two of the four will be elected.

Incumbent John Housel seeks another term to represent Cody sub-district B on the college board. Housel is opposed by Richard B. Jones in the Cody election.

Powell Hospital District will be voting to fill five board seats. Chris Cox is unopposed to finish out the remaining two years of the term he was appointed to in March.  Cox was appointed when former hospital board member Rich Stearns resigned from the board in disagreement with the federal vaccine mandate that required COVID-19 vaccination.

The hospital board has four openings for four-year terms. Incumbent board member R.J. Kost has filed for reelection of one of the spots. The openings resulted when Jim Carlson moved to Oregon and board members Deb Kleinfeldt and Gerri Ackley decided not to run again.

Bonnie Katz and Syd Thompson are carryover members of the hospital board.

There are contests for election of two directors on the Powell Fire District board. For the fire district Director No. 3 position, Gerald “Bear” May, Robert Feller and Brian Beavers have filed for one spot.

Three candidates also seek the Director No. 5 position. They are Kelly Spiering, Earl Melton and Heath Worstell.

Jerry Faxon is unopposed for the Director No. 1 board seat.

Four candidates have filed for three positions on the Crown Hill Cemetery Board of Trustees. They are Monte McClain, Clarence Anderson, John Karst and Jerry Clark.

For an at-large seat on the Powell Clarks Fork Conservation District board, Anthony Spiering and Greg Mayton have filed. Regan Smith has filed for the rural seat on the conservation district board, and Colby Schaefer has filed for the urban seat on the board.
