The annual Powell High School Robotics duck race sells rubber ducks to the community which are then “raced” in the lazy river at the Powell Aquatic Center.
This year over 700 ducks were dumped into the lazy river and guided by members of the robotics club who agreed to go for a swim for the sake of the fundraiser.
In total, roughly $3,000 was raised for the club, which goes towards travel, food and entry costs for competitions. These funds are not going toward this year’s Worlds Competition, but the club is currently seeking sponsors in the community to help cover costs. While the school district covers some costs, these costs are the responsibility of the club and students. This is one of two major fundraising events put on by Powell High School Robotics. The second event is the annual Turkey Trot in the fall.
Doris Moore, the first place winner, won a prize package worth $500 including a circular saw. Second place winner Russ Schwahn received a $300 prize package and third place winner MaryAnne Waite received a $200 prize package.
“Well, I think they are just our future engineers, all of them, they’re very good obviously. They took state,” Moore said of the robotics club members.
