Reclassification cycle shifts Powell opponents

Posted

The annual two-year reclassification cycle hits Wyoming this year, shifting opponents around the state based on Average Daily Membership (ADM) figures for schools.

Changes will become apparent immediately for Powell, with Thermopolis making its way over to the western conference in volleyball, track and basketball.

Thermopolis will join Powell, Lovell and Worland in the northwest quadrant, bumping Lander down to the southwest quadrant — competing against Lyman, Mountain View and Pinedale after Kemmerer dropped down to 2A.

In the eastern conference Glenrock and Moorcroft move up while Burns is the other 3A team that dropped down to 2A.

The next changes come in golf and cross country, where Evanston and Star Valley have shifted places — putting Evanston in 3A for both sports and boosting Star Valley to 4A.

That shift will also occur in the winter, with Evanston dropping down to 3A for wrestling and Star Valley moving up to 4A.

Girls’ wrestling will feature a single classification during its inaugural season. Girls will still be allowed to wrestle boys during the season but a waiver will be required.

Girls will not have a regional tournament, and two girls per weight class per team will qualify for the state tournament.

Indoor track will be split into two classifications, with Powell competing at the 3A level in its inaugural year.

Finally in soccer, Worland moves over to the eastern conference for 3A after Green River drops down to 3A in the western conference.

Swimming and tennis will remain the same for both boys and girls alongside football.

Per ADM numbers provided by the Wyoming High School Activities Association, Powell has the second highest ADM for schools that compete solely in 3A, just behind Lander.

PHS sits at No. 18 overall for ADM, with an ADM over the next two years averaged to be 573 students at PHS.
