Quake rout Butte in home opener

Team nets 22 goals in two games

While a lot has changed this season for the Yellowstone Quake, the Cody-based Tier III hockey team proved last weekend that some things are remaining the same. The Quake continued their regular-season mastery of Butte with wins of 14-3 and 8-3 in the first action this season at Riley Arena.

In Friday’s home opener for the Quake, Matthew Schulz finished with four goals, including three during an eight-goal third period that saw the Quake light the lamp three times in a 22-second span.

Zachary Tuchklaper also turned in a third-period hat trick with a trio of goals. TJay Lozier finished with two goals, both in the final three minutes of the first period to give the Quake a 3-1 lead at the first intermission. Derek Scott, Mitchell Pijanowski and Alex Johansons each scored in the second period to stretch Yellowstone’s lead to 6-2 at the second break.

Nathan Morris had a pair of late goals to round out the scoring for Yellowstone.

Tuchklaper was back at work on Saturday as both he and Alex Johansons scored a pair of first-period goals to help the Quake jump in front early.

Drew Parus scored just 31 seconds into the contest. Tuchklaper followed with his first goal of the period just nine seconds later.

Butte scored twice in the second period to draw within 5-3, but that was as close as visitors would get. Lozier, Parus and Schulz each tallied a goal in the third period.

The wins improve the Quake to 3-4 this season. The team hosts NORPAC-leading Southern Oregon for three games this week. Action begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday) and at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at Riley Arena in Cody.
