When you have made the inspiring trip up to the Buffalo Bill dam and stood on top of it and gazed to the depths below, have you ever wondered how they accomplished this feat of construction with the equipment they had back in the early 1900’s? There is another story behind this marvel.

On Thursday, April 13 at 5 p.m. at the Powell Library, University Women will be presenting a program by Beryl Churchill featuring the story of the construction engineer D.W. Cole’s family who lived with him at the dam site for more than four years. Beryl will take us through this adventure using personal letters from Cole, his wife and three daughters as they experienced those grueling four years. These stories will give you a whole new appreciation of what it took to build that dam.

Everyone is invited to come to the AAUW meeting. AAUW members will have a short business meeting at 4:30.

Churchill is the author of “Challenging the Canyon, a Family Man Builds a Dam” as well as several other books on the history of the Shoshone Project and the Buffalo Bill Dam. She has also written other books about the early life and founding of the Powell and Cody area. She grew up in Cody and when she married Winston Churchill she moved with him to the Churchill farms near Powell which was settled in 1909. Churchill has been a leader in various groups here in Powell and a valuable asset to the Homesteader Museum.
