It’s been an important year for native plants in Wyoming — this year April was declared Wyoming Native Plants Month by Gov. Mark Gordon. Then, native plants were put in the spotlight by students who created posters with the hope of winning one of four $250 prizes.
One of those four prizes went to Powell Middle School student Violet Peterson. Her winnings are going to buy her some new yarn, she said in an interview earlier this month — the young crocheter prefers worsted weight yarn.
Peterson collected $250 for her winning poster in mid-April. In addition to the cash prize the poster was sent back to her framed.
The contest’s theme, from the Wyoming Native Plant Society, was “Help: Wildlife: Grow Native Plants.”
Peterson’s poster stood out because a lot of the posters were just pictures, she said. She thought the poster should have a message in line with the contest’s theme. On her poster she wrote, “Plants Provide,” and under that she added, “Grow plants native to Wyoming to help feed and protect our wildlife.”
The society created the contest this year as a result of Gordon’s declaration of April as Wyoming Native Plant Month.
