Powell shooting competitors won 47 of 53 categories in the Park County 4-H Shooting Sports competition last weekend at the Cody Shooting Complex and the Heart Mountain Rod and Gun Club.
Four Powell shooters have qualified for the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championship in Grand Island, Nebraska, June 25-30, including Beth Brazelton — Powell’s first ever national qualifier.
This will be Brazelton’s final appearance as a 4-H competitor, having qualified for the third straight year in three separate disciplines. Participants qualify by winning the previous year’s state competition. Brazelton first won state in the muzzleloader competition in 2020. The following year she won the .22-caliber pistol competition, and last year she won the .22-caliber rifle competition.
The Eastern Wyoming College Freshman won four individual competitions at the county shoot, earning blue ribbons in the senior .22 rifle, .22 pistol, Blue Face target archery and 3-D archery competitions. Participants who are still 18 as of Jan. 1 can continue to compete in 4-H events.
Brazelton said facing her final competitions is exciting, but will also be sad after being involved in 4-H for the past decade.
“It is very bittersweet. I’ll miss all the different opportunities that 4-H gives you. You meet a lot of people and make a lot of friends through 4-H,” she said Tuesday.
Brazelton is studying veterinarian technology and animal sciences at Eastern Wyoming College.
Senior competitors Reese Lowe (air rifle), Esther Feathers (air pistol), and Trey Erickson (hunting skills) will join Brazelton at nationals. Each state forms a team at the competition. Last year Brazelton’s .22 pistol team won fourth place and the previous year her muzzleloader team finished fifth.
Wyoming started participating in the national event four years ago — unfortunately too late for Brazelton’s brother Brian, who was also a top 4-H shooter for Powell. Their parents, Lillian and and David, have been active 4-H leaders for years, Beth said.
4-H is a youth development program that uses project-based experiences to teach our youth real life skills to prepare them to become positive members in their communities and world. Its motto is “To Make the Best Better,” and “always strives to create greater successes with each child in each project,” according to the national organization.
4-H members across the country join and choose projects they are interested in. These projects vary from rocketry and robotics to entomology (bugs, insects, etc.) and sheep. Then members become part of a club that meets regularly to conduct business which allows the youth to be a part of a full functioning group. Within their club they perform community service, give presentations and run meetings with parliamentary procedure. In their clubs or during project meetings they learn about their chosen projects and in hands on experiences create a finished project by the end of the year. These finished projects, whether they are a market weight sheep or a walking robot, are displayed and judged at the county fair.
“Throughout this process youth gain numerous skills that include responsibility, record keeping, and perseverance,” the organization reports.
Starla Craig, who is a leader in shooting competitions, has high hopes for a championship this year.
“We’re looking for our first national champion — lets, hope. That would be awesome if they can achieve that,” she said.
Participants looking to qualify for the 2024 national event will compete for a state championship in Douglas July 6-10. Park County is a dominant force, partially due to support participants receive from the county 4-H council, Craig said. Park is the only county in the state that pays the entry fees of their competitors in the state. Brazelton said they also cover other expenses for those heading to the national competition.
Park County champions include Rowdee Goolsbey, Sophia Serr, Rhett Goolsbey, Beth Brazelton, Dakota Erickson, Reese Lowe, Charlee Brence, Tanner Quinterno, Sean Lowe, Esther Feathers, Ellie Feathers, Bud Meyers, Dylan Hansen, Maria Estes, Russell Goolsbey, Titus Burton, Sophia Serr, Eaen Estes, Trey Erickson, Macie Donaldson, Blake Donaldson, Phillip Ellis, Noelle Leighton and Hayden Serr.
Cody’s top winners were Cori Gordon (national qualifier), Rowen Brouwer, Noah Bacon and Francis Wenck.
