Community identity — both its history and present day — inspires a contest sponsored by Homesteader Museum to create postcards of Powell.

“One thing that people have always asked for, both locals and visitors, is a Powell postcard,” explained Brandi Wright, director and curator of Homesteader Museum. “I thought it would be fun to ask the community for images.”

To encourage the gathering of photographs, designs and artwork to represent pride in Powell, the museum is sponsoring a contest  through Aug. 31, out of which postcards and stickers would be developed. Submissions should be sent or brought to the museum as entries in the Powell Pride postcard and sticker contests.

“The idea is to have the community submit entries for each contest and have them to the museum by the end of August,” Wright said. “Then I will hang them in the gallery to have the community vote on their favorites. The top designs will be produced and sold in the gift shop. And there are Powell Bucks prizes for the top three winners.”

“I know we could do historical postcards for Powell, but we lack images from today,” she added. “I always want images of Powell — homesteading, farming, etc. for the museum’s collection. I thought the postcard/sticker contest might inspire locals to look through old scrapbooks and photo albums or encourage people to take photographs of their favorite things and places.”
