Continuing to excel at the Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl, Powell Middle School retained the first place title when the Panthers won by three points May 10 on their home turf.
The 36th Annual Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl was the first time Powell Middle School had swept all four rounds of the competition, noted librarian Denise Catlin. In the competition, eight team members must answer 60 written questions within an hour and then complete four oral rounds. At the end of the day, Powell won the maximum amount of points possible, eighth grader Calvin Opps said.
“They won the written round and the oral round,” Catlin said. “So they didn’t lose a single point. Period.”
The last round was difficult for the team, in part because of its focus on math, said Huston Dearcorn.
“One of the people on the Burlington team got first place in Mathcounts,” Dearcorn said. “She got a really, really high score in that. So she was destroying the math questions.”
Catlin thanked IMC clerk Jill Morrow who helped host the event, community members DaleAnn Meeker, Bill Harvison, Tim Morrow, Dan Morrow, Cheryl Gettings and Miles McNair.
