With ambulances parked just outside the bays and balloons fluttering in the wind, Powell Valley Healthcare showed off its new ambulance garage last week with an open house for members of the public, as well as Powell police and firefighters, to check out the new space.
The event doubled as a chili cookoff with a fitting ending as the hospital’s EMS crew, who now have more space thanks to the new building, also turned out to have made the best chilis.
Jennifer Jones landed first place as well as the People's Choice Award, Bianca Chavez took second and Brittany Jackson third.
The garage started being fully used Oct. 18.
Last December, Powell Hospital District trustees unanimously approved a $588,000 bid by TNT Contractors of Denver for the project.
The facility provides additional space for ambulances and complements the current bays, while offering better storage and an aerosol decontamination bay. Prior to the new garage, the Powell fire hall had to be used for any decontamination.
