Powell High School volleyball team hosts fun run fundraiser

Powellites and Powell High School alumni of all ages woke up early Saturday morning to raise money for the Panther volleyball squad.

The team hosted the Orange and Black Fun Run at 7:15 a.m., with all proceeds benefiting the program amid recent budget cuts. The race, which started and ended at the American Legion, was a 5K for runners and a 2K for walkers.

“This community came to support a local event and even donated more than just the entry fee,” organizer Jess Campbell said. “It was a great success and the Lady Panthers already have plans to make it bigger and better next year!”

The route for the 5K went around town in a unique route, with PHS volleyball players spread across multiple locations to ensure that runners stayed on the course. More than 40 individuals — runners and walkers — participated in the early morning fun run.

Ahead of the 2021 season, it was a great opportunity for the team to immerse itself in the community.

“To get exposure for this team is important,” Campbell said. “To get them out in the community, make connections with the community so that the community will hopefully come and support them. I believe that was achieved.”

PHS senior Daniel Merritt won the overall and boys’ races, while Brynn Hillman and Kabrie Cannon were the top girls’ finishers.
