Powell High School cheer team receives grant

Posted

When budget cuts were discussed during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Powell High School cheer team had little to cheer about. The future of its funding was uncertain.

So Panther Assistant Cheer Coach Cindy Jacobs was pleasantly surprised when the team was named one of 53 schools in the country to receive $1,000 from California Casualty’s Thomas R. Brown Athletics Grant.

Jacobs said she put in for multiple grants around the country.

“We had this opportunity and I filled it out, not thinking that we would get it and amazed that we got it,” Jacobs said.

The grant, which was established by the insurance company in 2011, provides funding to programs that are impacted by budget cuts or limited budgets. It has awarded more than $700,000 in its seven years of existence to more than 650 schools across the nation.

“We are going to use it for some uniforms, some equipment — or even use it for some food,” said Panther Cheer Coach Vicki Walsh.

Walsh said the funding will be used for many things within the program and may help fund new choreography for the program next year.
