Powell coach to be honored by peers

Long-time Powell High School Coach Steve Bailey will be honored for 40 years of coaching in Wyoming when Wyoming's coaches and all-star athletes gather in Casper this week.Bailey will also be on the bench for the girls' North-South All-Star game serving as an assistant to PHS head girls' coach Luke Danforth, who is coaching the North team. Bailey, who retired last year after 39 years in education, 38 of them in Powell, has continued to coach the PHS girls' basketball team, a position he has held since the early 1990s.According to former PHS girls coach Dale Ann Meeker, Bailey's career in Powell includes a year as head boys' coach and a few years as an assistant coach at Northwest College. He spent several years coaching the freshman boys' team under former Panther coach Ron Laird before becoming her assistant.“Steve has done so much for kids,” Meeker said. “He's one of those special people who gives so much to the sport. He loves to watch the young players grow and develop.”Danforth also cited Bailey's love of basketball and of the kids he coaches, and added that he “is a real positive influence on the kids.”Meeker called Bailey a unique individual who is “not a limelight type of person” but concentrates on the kids he works with.“He can always find something good in every person,” Meeker said.“He's always positive,” Danforth said. “He's a true gentleman.”Bailey will be recognized during the Wyoming Coaches Annual Clinic this week. Activities will include all-star games in volleyball and basketball on Saturday. Powell High School athletes participating in the games include Jordan Brown in boys' basketball, McKenzie Danforth in girls' basketball and Kelsey Allen in volleyball. Joining Danforth and Bailey in representing PHS coaches will be volleyball coach Cindi Smith, who will coach the North team, and golf coach Troy Hildebrand.
