Police: Downtown burglar nabbed

Posted

A 19-year old Powell man has been charged with burglarizing four downtown businesses the nights of March 25 and 30.Jonathan Eads was arrested April 1 and charged with four counts of burglary. Those charges — stemming from two separate break-ins at Game On, one at Appraisal West, and another at True Value — are all felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison and $10,000 in fines.

According to documents filed by prosecutors, a large amount of stolen property was recovered from Eads' apartment.

On the night of March 25, Game On and neighboring Appraisal West were broken into. The front door window and skylight were smashed out of Game On, and Appraisal West had been entered from the roof.

According to documents, Eads originally tried to enter Game On from the roof but “ended up inside Appraisal West.” The attempt apparently involved smashing through the skylight and lowering a rope.

On the night of March 30, Game On was broken into again. Additionally, someone broke into True Value, shattering the glass at the back entrance and rummaging around the store.

Game On reported a number of items stolen — including a Nintendo Wii game console, accessories and games.

The other businesses also suffered losses.

The case broke because of what Powell Police Chief Tim Feathers termed “alert” police work.

While on patrol on the night of March 30, Officer Kevin Schmidt saw a male dressed in black with a backpack and a bag in hand. Before he could talk to the man, the subject entered an apartment on north Hamilton Street. Schmidt noted the address.

After learning of the two reported burglaries the next day, Officer Matt McCaslin was dispatched to interview the apartment's tenants — Eads and a roommate.

When McCaslin arrived, Eads was playing a Nintendo Wii and wearing a gray, long-sleeve Game On T-shirt that “appeared to be new,” the document says.

Eads initially told police that the shirt and games were given to him by a friend.

On April 1, Eads and his roommate consented to a search by Police Investigator Dave Brown.

“There were numerous games, tools, and game systems in his (Eads') room,” wrote Brown, who later added that “thousands of dollars” in stolen property was recovered from the apartment.

Circuit Court Judge Bruce Waters set Eads' bond at $20,000. A preliminary hearing is slated for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in Cody.
