Wood Bat Tourney this weekend in Douglas

A long weekend in Green River had highs and lows for the Powell Pioneers — winning 4-0 against Pocatello and 8-3 against Douglas before having a 14-game winning streak snapped late in a 4-3 loss to Evanston. Powell then rebounded and defeated Torrington 10-0 on Sunday.

POWELL 4, POCATELLO 0

Starting out the weekend the Pioneers (32-14 overall, 8-0 ‘A’ Northwest) squared off with the only team from outside Wyoming in the tournament in the Pocatello Rebels.

Powell got on the board first in the bottom of the second, after Cole Fauskee singled with one out and stole second during Jacob Gibson’s at bat.

Ethan Welch drove him in on a single and gave Powell the 1-0 lead early.

The Pioneers added to the lead in the third, after Cade Queen singled and advanced after Aidan Wantulok was hit by a pitch.

A double by Dalton Worstell brought in both runners, and gave Powell the 3-0 lead.

Trey Stenerson continued to pitch strong, giving up one hit through four innings.

Powell got its final run in the fifth, when Queen walked, Stenerson doubled and Wantulok was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.

A passed ball allowed Queen to score to make it 4-0, but Powell was unable to do any more damage.

Stenerson finished the complete game on the mound, only giving up three hits.

“Trey pitched well and the defense played well behind him,” manager Jason Borders said. “It took a little time to figure out the wood bats, we hit balls hard but they were right at people.”

Worstell finished with two RBIs while Welch finished with one.

POWELL 8, DOUGLAS 3

After the victory Friday it was a matchup against the top team from the east in Douglas (27-10 overall, 9-1 ‘A’ East).

Powell came out swinging, jumping ahead early against the Cats.

Brock Johnson got on through a single, stole second during Queen’s at bat before Queen drove him in on a single to make it 1-0.

That lead instantly grew, when Stenerson stepped up and hit a home run over the left field wall to make it 3-0.

The runs didn’t stop there, with Wantulok and Worstell singling before Aiden Greenwald brought in a run on a double to make it 4-0.

Worstell scored on a passed ball before the final out to make it 5-0 after the first.

Douglas got a run early against Johnson’s pitching, scoring on a single to make it 5-1.

“He [Johnson] came out too keyed up at the beginning and struggled with his command,” Borders said. “Brock beats a lot of teams just by just walking onto the mound.”

Powell got the run back in the second inning, after three straight walks loaded the bases with one out, and Wantulok singled to bring in a run and make it 6-1.

Neither team found any offense over the next two innings, before Douglas chipped away at the lead after a walk followed by a home run made it 6-3.

Johnson got out of the inning with two strikeouts, helping Powell maintain the lead.

With two outs in the bottom half of the fifth, Powell got an insurance run to help push the lead back out. Fauskee singled before advancing to second and third on a steal and wild pitch — Welch’s double drove Fauskee in and made it 7-3.

Johnson made it through two outs in the sixth before Queen came in to close the game for the final four outs.

Powell’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth after Johnson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Queen brought him in on a single and made it 8-3.

Queen gave up one hit in the seventh but closed out the save by not giving up a run to give Powell the 8-3 win.

Johnson finished with 14 strikeouts and five walks while giving up two hits over 5 2/3 innings.

EVANSTON 4, POWELL 3

Looking to extend the winning streak out to 15 games as part of a back-to-back set of games Saturday, the Pioneers came up against Evanston (16-17 overall, 2-0 ‘A’ Southwest).

Powell loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning, but was unable to get a run in as both teams could not find runs early.

The Pioneers got on the board first in the top of the fourth, after Stenerson hit a single but was out on the next play on a fielder’s choice to put Wantulok on first.

Worstell singled, advancing Wantulok to third to get in scoring position.

Fauskee reached on an error that brought in Wantulok, and gave Powell the 1-0 lead.

Evanston answered in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game 1-1 on a solo home run to lead out the inning.

Three straight outs kept it 1-1, and Powell had an answer in the top of the sixth.

Fauskee walked and was subbed out by Jordan Loera who came in as a courtesy runner.

Ryan Cordes hit a single, with Loera scoring on an errant throw while Cordes advanced to second on the throw to make it 2-1.

Cordes stole third before Johnson hit a single to bring him in and make it 3-1.

The Outlaws had an answer in the bottom half of the inning, getting on with a single and only one out.

A double brought in a runner, and two straight singles scored another runner to tie the game 3-3.

A Gibson strikeout got Powell to two outs, but a bobbled ball on an error at second scored a run to make it 4-3 in favor of Evanston.

Powell finished with three errors, the most since the Pioneers’ last loss to a Wyoming ‘A’ team, which was against Sheridan on June 4 when Powell had four errors.

“Those errors came at bad times,” Borders said.

The Pioneers were unable to get a run back in the top of the seventh, and the 14-game winning streak was snapped.

Despite the loss, Borders wasn’t too worried in the Pioneers’ performance.

“I wasn’t too disappointed in that game,” Borders said.

Gibson finished with five strikeouts while giving up three earned in his six innings of work.

Cordes and Johnson finished with RBIs for the Pioneers.

POWELL 10, TORRINGTON 0

After the loss Saturday the Pioneers recovered Saturday night and turned around to face Torrington (21-10 overall, 4-3 ‘A’ East) at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Powell came out swinging once again, with Johnson getting on via a single before Queen hit a home run over the left field fence to make it 2-0.

Powell was unable to cause more damage in the first, but was able to get back on the board in the top of the third.

Queen doubled with one out before Stenerson hit a home run to center and doubled the lead to 4-0.

Wantulok followed with a triple and scored on a passed ball to make it 5-0.

Powell got more runs on the board in the fifth, when Queen led off with a single, followed by a Stenerson single with Queen advancing to third on the throw to give Powell two on with no outs.

A ground out by Wantulok scored Queen, and Cordes doubled to score Stenerson and make it 7-0.

A walk to Worstell put another on, and a single by Fauskee scored Cordes to make it 8-0.

In the sixth it was yet another home run for Powell, after Queen singled to get on and Stenerson hit the ball over the center field wall to make it 10-0.

“It was good to see him [Stenerson] hit two home runs,” Borders said. “Cade also continues to swing it well.”

A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs.  Powell was unable to extend the lead but finished with the mercy rule after the sixth 10-0.

“We let the east know where we are for the most part,” Borders said.

Queen got the win with nine strikeouts and gave up one hit while Greenwald came in and got four strikeouts while also only giving up one hit.

“Aiden was just as good as Cade — they couldn’t touch his curveball,” Borders said. “I’m pretty proud of my pitching staff right now.”

Stenerson had four RBIs, Queen had two, while Wantulok, Cordes and Fauskee each had one.

DOUGLAS TOURNAMENT

Powell was set to take on the Sheridan ‘AA’ Troopers (29-19 overall, 4-0 ‘AA’) in a brief pit stop at home Wednesday before heading back out on the road this weekend for the Bolln Wood Bat Tournament in Douglas.

Powell kicks things off against Wheatland (10-17 overall, 1-5 ‘A’ East) at 10 a.m. on Saturday before turning around and facing Torrington once again at 12:30 p.m.

“We are hoping to get them a little more feel for the east teams,” Borders said.

Games on Sunday will be determined based on Saturday’s results with the third place pool play teams squaring off at 8 a.m.; semifinal games at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. and the championship game at 3:30 p.m.
