Pioneers top Douglas and Lovell Mustangs

The Powell Pioneers A team won both ends of a three-game get-together with Douglas and Lovell on Tuesday at Ed Lynn Memorial Field.

Powell improved its record to 5-2 in the American Legion Baseball season by edging Douglas 4-3 in the opener and cruising past Lovell 9-4 in the nightcap.

“... we are swinging the bat well, putting the ball in play, putting pressure on the opposing team’s defense and striking out very little,” said Pioneers Manager Joe Cates. “I am extremely pleased with how my entire program is playing.”

In the middle game of round robin play, Douglas outlasted Lovell 14-10.

Pioneers 4, Douglas 3

Colin Queen and Brock Johnson combined to pitch and hit the Pioneers to a 4-3 win over the Douglas Cats in the opener Tuesday afternoon.

Each had two hits, and none was bigger than Johnson’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie. He drove in — who else? — Queen, who had led off the inning with a hot shot under the Douglas shortstop’s glove.

Queen threw six innings for the Pioneers before giving way to Johnson for the save in the seventh inning. Johnson threw only six pitches in the seventh to retire Douglas in order and preserve the win for Queen.

Powell scored three times in the third inning, and for most of the game it looked like that would be enough.

Kobe Ostermiller walked to open the inning and advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch. He scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Keaton Rowton.

Queen walked, and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Ashton Brewer’s RBI groundout scored Rowton, and Queen trotted home on a mishandled ground ball at second base. Powell led 3-0.

Queen breezed through four innings and had two outs in the fifth before Douglas broke through. Two Powell errors compounded three straight singles, and the Cats pulled into a 3-3 tie.

In the Douglas sixth, Queen gave up a single and a base on balls before Canyon Gonzales made a two-out catch in the left field corner to preserve the 4-3 lead.

Queen struck out five in his six innings of work while walking two.

Pioneers 9, Lovell 4

Powell built an early 8-0 lead, and three Pioneer pitchers limited the Lovell Mustangs to three hits in the 9-4 final game victory.

Landon Sessions started and threw 3.1 hitless innings before leaving with a 5-0 lead and one out and one on in the fourth. Trey Stenerson came on to pitch through the fifth to get credit for the win. He allowed one run on a two-out single in the fifth. Cade Queen took over and pitched the final two innings. He was touched for three runs and two hits in the Lovell sixth.

About the only blemish on Powell’s pitching performance were bases on balls; the three pitchers issued nine walks and hit one Lovell batter.

“I was happy with the way Sessions bounced back on the mound,” said coach Cates. “We still have to do a better job of throwing strikes early in the count so we can drop down the number of walks.”

Powell started fast with a four-run first inning. Colin Queen laced an RBI double after Keaton Rowten was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Ashton Brewer, Cade Queen and Sessions contributed run-scoring singles in the inning.

Johnson singled and scored on a throwing error in the third to make it 5-0. Ostermiller drove in two runs with a triple in a three-run fourth inning, and the Pioneers led 8-0.

Cade Queen had three of Powell’s 10 hits in the game, and Brewer was two for three with a pair of singles.

“As a team, we hit the ball well,” Cates said.

The Pioneers A team will be in Riverton Friday for an afternoon-evening doubleheader.
