Pig mud wrestling canceled

The 2022 Park County Fair pig mud wrestling Grandstand Event was canceled. The popular event, scheduled for opening day, July 26, is traditionally free. However, this year’s pig mud wrestling contest was canceled because of costs, according to William Wood, county events manager, who also oversees the annual fair at the Park County Fairgrounds in Powell.

Although the pig mud wrestling event is traditionally free to the public, the county spent an estimated $3,100 to hold it in 2021, the Powell Tribune reported last year.

Wood said this year’s pig mud wrestling event was canceled because of the rising price of hogs on the market.

“Our vendor is unable to get any hogs,” Wood said. “Price of hogs is outrageous right now.”

The county events and fair manager said 100-weight hogs cost $200. At that price, the costs cannot be recouped after the event, he said, explaining the hogs are normally sold after the fair.

Double D Livestock in Greybull is the vendor responsible for supplying the hogs, according to Wood, who emphasized “these animals are treated very well.”

“The only reason for canceling is the vendor can’t supply the livestock to put on a show,” Wood said, pointing out he’s already received numerous requests for entry forms from potential pig mud wrestling participants.

Although no plans for an alternative event were announced, Wood said the county fair board would hold a meeting on Tuesday, June 7, to discuss a replacement for the pig mud wrestling extravaganza.

The fair manager said he anticipates a great Park County Fair despite cancellation of the popular event.

“Look forward to seeing everyone at the fair,” Wood said. “It’s gonna be a great event.”
