Breanne Thiel, senior library assistant in Powell, is a big fan of pies and dad jokes. So auctioning off pies during Pi Day (March 14, ie 3.14) fit the bill perfectly. Even more so because, for the second consecutive year, the fundraiser proceeds are going toward the new library project.
“It’s a fun way to have pie and books,” she said.
This year the library raised between $150-$200 toward a new building, which is being funded mostly by a combination of state funding through federal CARES Act funds and more than $3 million from the county.
Thiel had displayed seven pies near the entrance for the second annual event, a couple more of the tasty treats than the first go around last year. Of course, being a library it was a silent auction, and midway through the afternoon one lady took advantage of the buy now option and plopped down $30 for a Key lime pie. That left a cherry cheesecake pie, cherry hand pies and more still up for grabs.
Bidders were also able to vote on which pie was the most literary — Thiel said last year someone decorated a pie with the Harry Potter theme. This year’s pies didn’t go quite to those lengths, but she had placed books alongside the pies that have the dessert in the title — another way to show the connection.
“I’d like to keep it going and do it again,” she said, adding “It’s something different to do for Pi Day.”
