PHS track renovation starts Monday

Construction for the Powell High School track is set to begin Monday, May 20, beginning what is set to be a two-week project to give the running surface a new look after 15 years.

In February, the Park County School District 1 board accepted a bid for $223,900 from Hellas Construction out of Austin, Texas, the same company that replaced the PHS turf last summer.

The project has been paid for using major maintenance funding.

Support Services Coordinator Rob McCray said the project manager will arrive on Friday, performing a walkthrough so that construction may begin on Monday.

He said that depending on the weather, the project is anticipated to be completed on June 3.

“We will ask that no one uses that area between those times for safety and efficiency of the contractor and public,” McCray said.

Those wanting to run can still use the middle school track.

The new track will be primarily black, with the exchange zones painted orange.

Additionally, the runways for the pits used for long and triple jumps, pole vault and the high jump surface will be painted black.

The main track will only receive one coat of paint while the runways and high jump pits will be resurfaced.
