PHS track claws their way to third place finish

Sunshine and clear skies met the Panther boys track team on Thursday in Lovell, as it fought to a third place finish. The Panthers finished with 94 points, placing behind second place Lovell, who had 102 points, and Worland, who won with 154.

“The kids got out and competed very well,” Panthers’ track coach Scott Smith said. “Some rust showed through, but that was for most every kid at the meet.  So it was good to work out the kinks.”

The day’s lone victory for the Panthers came from sophomore Adam Williams, who won the pole vault after clearing an even 12 feet.

Panther sophomore Isaiah Woyak tied for second in high jump, clearing 6 feet; reaching the automatic qualifying mark for the state meet.

Other top finishers for the Panthers included junior Hyrum Jeide, who placed second in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.03 and second in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43.68; senior Sheldon Shoopman, who placed third in the discus with a throw of 135 feet, 9 inches, and third in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 9 inches.

Fellow senior Toran Graham placed second in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, 7 inches.

“I think there are kids that don’t realize what they are capable of, and I hope to see more kids laying it out on the line instead of holding back,” Smith said.

The Panthers will get a week to rest and practice, as they head to Rocky Mountain this Saturday to take part in an invitational. No start time has been set for the meet at this time.

The Panthers have three more scheduled meets before the regional meet scheduled for May 13 and 14 in Kemmerer.

Smith said both the girls and boys teams are working to finalize events heading toward regionals and state, but he still expects breakout performances, as some kids are close to automatically qualifying.
