Finish regular season in Casper

One final non-conference matchup had the Powell Panthers tennis teams squaring off with the Rawlins Outlaws on Saturday — with the girls sweeping the competition 5-0 and the boys squeezing out a 3-2 victory over the visitors.

Senior Chase Anderson got things started for the Panther girls at the No. 1 singles position, walking away with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

“I am hoping to play an aggressive style, trying to get ahead in points and look to try and finish sets well,” Panther tennis coach Joe Asay said. “That is the key, that has been our goal in this short season.”

Asay said he has been stressing it more at the doubles level, but said the Panthers can push it across the board to try and get ahead in sets.

While pushing an aggressive style, Asay said he still wants his athletes to focus on first serves and ensure there are also no double faults.

Anderson’s victory helped spur the Panther girls’ squad to not drop a set across all levels of play, finishing a combined 10-0 in sets.

Junior Lachelle Lee bounced back from her loss to Cody on Tuesday, finishing with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of her opponent at No. 2 singles.

The senior duo of Alli Harp and Sydney Hull continued their strong play, also finishing with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 1 doubles.

Seniors Hannah Hincks and Alexis Terry continued their strong run of play as well, winning 6-0, 6-2 in their No. 2 doubles match.

In No. 3 doubles the Panthers had a new pairing take to the court, with junior Meaghan McKeen joining junior Maya Landwehr.

The pair started slow in the first set, winning 7-5, but came out dominant in the second set for a 6-1 decision.

“It was kind of a slow start, but even with Meaghan stepping in for Lucy [Whipple] that group finished up just fine,” Asay said.

He said that junior Lucy Whipple, who is typically Landwehr’s partner, was unable to attend the match on Saturday due to a prior commitment.

For the boys, junior Cade Queen dominated his match at No. 1 singles from start to finish, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Nathan Preator faced a difficult opponent at No. 2 singles, dropping his matchup in straight sets 6-7, 3-6.

Senior Kalin Hicswa and junior Keegan Hicswa battled back in a difficult No. 1 doubles matchup.

After dropping the first set 4-6, the brothers battled back to win the final two sets 6-4, 6-3.

Junior Seeger Wormald and sophomore Isaac Stensing dropped a difficult matchup at No. 2 doubles losing 1-6, 1-6.

Freshmen Ryan Barrus and Taeson Schultz cruised to victory at No. 3 doubles to seal the victory for the Panthers, winning their matchup 6-1, 6-2.

Powell now has three regular season matchups remaining, beginning with a conference dual in Cody at 4 p.m. Thursday (today).

The Panthers then head on the road, making their way down to Casper on Saturday to take on both Casper schools, starting at 10 a.m. against defending state champions Kelly Walsh, followed by a matchup with Natrona County at 2 p.m.

“We will have a solid test with Cody and the defending champions on the boys and girls side in KW,” Asay said. “Then we will finish up the regular season on Saturday with NC.”

After finishing this weekend, the Panthers will have one final opportunity to play in front of the home crowd next weekend, hosting the North Conference Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
