A local high school senior has received a big award and increase in his Civil Air Patrol rank.
In Powell’s National Guard Recruiting Office on Tuesday, Rui Parker received the Amelia Earhart Award and was promoted from the rank of lieutenant to captain in the CAP.
The Civil Air Patrol is a volunteer organization of civilian airmen that was founded in 1941.
“It means quite a bit just coming from an airman and then moving up through the ranks,” Parker said of his promotion.
Parker has spent five years as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. In this time he has steadily moved up the ranks.
The ceremony was attended by Parker’s fellow members of the Civil Air Patrol, including Lt. Colonel BJ Carlson, E5/Sgt. William Conley and Parker’s mother, Cpt. Debra McKelvey.
According to a fact sheet provided by Carlson, the Amelia Earhart Award is the Cadet Program’s third milestone. Now that Parker has received this award he is eligible to receive the three premier awards offered by the program.
Parker hopes to achieve these remaining awards in three months.
He has been a member of the Civil Air Patrol for five years, and plans to pursue a career in the military after going to the University of Wyoming. Currently, he is focused on finishing an associates degree at Northwest College.
