Yellowstone on pace for record seasonBy the time you read this newspaper, Yellowstone National Park has likely recorded its 3,151,344th visitor of 2009 — setting a new annual record.Through the end of September, park visitation was a scant 7,500 visitors shy of the annual record, set in 2007. No official updated tally will be released until the end of the month, but over the past five years, the park has averaged more than 4,700 visitors per day in October, making it a good bet that the record has been broken between Sept. 30 and today (Thursday).

The first nine months of the year brought more than 3.1 million people to the park — the most ever for that time period.

The East Entrance is up more than 15 percent as compared to the first nine months last year, serving as a gateway for 416,656 visitors thus far in ‘09.

Continuing a trend which began in May, visitation to Yellowstone set a new record in September.

The park recorded nearly 490,000 visitors in September, up almost 12 percent from a year ago, and well above the previous record of 468,060, set in 1995.
