Panther wrestlers roll over Laurel Locomotives

Tribune photo by Don Amend Panther wrestlers roll over Laurel LocomotivesThe Powell Panthers scored six pins Tuesday night on the way to a dual meet win over the Laurel Locomotives, 46-18.Jessee Craig put the quickest end to his match by pinning Laurel's Gage Cusker in 52 seconds at 119 pounds. Zach Thiel, followed with a pin of his own at 125 and Olie Olson dominated Locomotive Austin Connor and cruised to a 21-10 decision at 130.

Other pins came from Colt Nix at 135, Monte Nickles at 171 and Devin Jordan at 189.

Powell also scored six points when Trent Gillett won by forfeit at 145.

Laurel's first win came at 152, when Powell's Auston Carter, wrestling his first match of the season, lost by decision to Laurel's Dylan Kramer. Jimmy Seckman was edged out by the Locomotives' Cole Perrigo, 9-8 and Joe Lujan and Trevor Griffith lost by pin.

For the first time in a long while, the Panthers were able to fill every weight class for the match, including the 98-pound class, which is wrestled in Montana, but not Wyoming. At that weight Panther Charles Witteck lost a 5-0 decision to Laurel's Karson Kukes.

No other details were available at press time.

The Panthers will close out 2009 at the Battle of the Big Horns, a dual meet tournament in Worland. Seventeen teams are expected to compete, including 4A teams from Star Valley, Natrona County, Kelly Walsh, Rock Springs and Green River. Conference rivals Worland, Cody and Lander will also be wrestling in the meet which starts at 1 p.m. Friday and continues on Saturday beginning at 8 a.m.
