The Powell Panther volleyball team wrapped up the 3A Northwest title with a sweep of Thermopolis on Friday and another 3-0 win at home over Worland on Saturday.

POWELL 3, THERMOPOLIS 0

(25-9, 25-17, 25-15)

Attempting to keep rolling in the 3A Northwest, the Panthers (21-6 overall, 5-0 3A Northwest) made the trip down to Thermopolis (8-16-2 overall, 1-4 3A Northwest) on Friday night to take on the Bobcats.

Powell came out and was in a battle early, tied at four before opening up a 9-4 lead and forcing a Thermopolis timeout.

Powell continued growing the lead, and cruised the remainder of the way to a 25-9 win.

Another battle early in the second set had the Panthers battling until nearly midway through, until Powell slowly pulled away and pushed the lead out to 17-9.

The Panthers continued to push and finished the set, winning 25-17.

Heading into the third set, Powell looked to put away Thermopolis early but was unable to hold off the Bobcats with both teams battling to 10 points.

The Panthers were able to pull away midway through the set, and finish with a 25-15 win to earn the sweep.

“It wasn’t pretty but we played well enough to win so I will take it,” coach Lesli Spencer said.

Addy Thorington led Powell with 16 kills and eight aces. Stevee Walsh had 15 assists while Waycee Harvey tied for the lead in digs alongside Alexa Richardson with 10, and tied for the lead in blocks with Kodee Asay with 1.5.

POWELL 3, WORLAND 0

(25-12, 25-15, 25-18)

Returning home Saturday the Panthers faced the team just behind them in the standings on senior day, taking on the Worland Warriors (17-12 overall, 3-2 3A Northwest).

With a victory the Panthers would lock up the No. 1 seed at regionals, and would continue their recent dominance over the 3A Northwest.

Both teams came out and battled to a 6-6 tie early, before Powell got the ball to Thorington on the serve.

From that point forward, the Panthers went on a 15-point run, opening up the first set against the Warriors.

“When you get a serve going it can quickly do that,” Spencer said. “Our block was solid and everybody was hitting the ball.”

Powell held off any runs from Worland, finishing with a 25-12 first set win.

In the second set, Powell started out strong but Worland was unable to answer this time and Powell quickly opened a 13-6 lead and forced a timeout from the Warriors.

A strong effort from junior Saige Kidd through the middle helped drive the Panthers, forming a strong duo with Asay to record 5.5 blocks in the match between them.

“We need to know how to communicate so we can get that block closed and be really strong at the net,” Kidd said.

That lead continued to grow out to 21-9, forcing another timeout before Powell finished the set with a 25-15 win.

A closer battle early in the third had Powell up 11-9, before the Panthers started to pull away with a 19-13 lead.

Powell was able to finish the set with a 25-18 win, and claim the top seed out of the 3A Northwest at the regional tournament in Lander set to start on Oct. 27.

Kidd led with 14 kills in addition to her 2.5 blocks, attributing her big day to the outgoing seniors at PHS.

“We have such a tight bond,” Kidd said. “Of course it’s sad to see them leave but we were able to push past those emotions and it really brought us together as a team.”

Catelynn Floy had 20 assists, Richardson led with 12 digs and Thorington had four aces.

PARK COUNTY BATTLE TUESDAY

Powell will take a short pit stop out of 3A at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (today), making the trip to Cody to take on the Fillies (19-2 overall, 5-0 4A Northwest) who locked up the top spot in their conference this past weekend.

Powell defeated Cody 3-1 in Powell back on Sept. 21, and will be looking for the series over its rivals.

“Every game is important but for the outlook of our season this game won’t have a bearing on it,” Spencer said. “I don’t think it’ll affect how we play at regionals or state. It’s more for the Park County rivalry, and if we could beat them twice in one season that would be fabulous.”

Powell currently sits as the No. 4-ranked team in the 3A WyoPreps Coaches and Media Poll after a reshuffling last week and Cody is the No. 2-ranked team in 4A.

After the match Tuesday, Powell will turn its attention to Lovell on Friday, hosting its final match of the year against the Bulldogs (12-15-1 overall, 1-4 3A Northwest) and will be looking to finish the 3A Northwest unbeaten for the second year in a row.

That will be the final match of the regular season before heading into postseason play.
