Head to conference in Green River

The biggest field of the season to date saw the Powell Panther golf team battle to an eighth place finish in Buffalo last Thursday and Friday, wrapping up the regular season before heading to the conference tournament in Green River this weekend.

Leading the way for the Panthers was Trey Scott, who turned in rounds of 81 and 87 to finish in a tie for 15th.

“He did an excellent job of battling back on his back nine the second day after a tough start,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “That was a great sign headed into the final two weeks.”

Just two strokes behind Scott overall was Gunnar Erickson, who had rounds of 88 and 82 — continuing to work towards the end of the season and finish a couple of tough holes each round.

Third on the team for the Panthers was Jackson Hill, who turned in rounds of 83 and 90 to finish a few strokes behind Erickson.

“Jackson continues to play solid golf each week,” Hildebrand said. “He has grown so much as a player in the past two years and it is nice to see him rewarded for the work he put in this summer.”

The next group of golfers for the Panthers grouped closely together, led by Will Jackson who finished with rounds of 96 and 98.

Hildebrand said Jackson was consistent, and if he cleans up a couple of shots around the greens he will be right back in the lower 90s and upper 80s right when the team needs him.

Just behind with scores of 95 and 102 was Isaiah Woyak, who Hildebrand said is showing signs of breaking through with all aspects of his game.

“He has a lot of talent and when he get gets it all put together he is capable of posting some excellent rounds,” Hildebrand said.

In his first ever trip to Buffalo, Cody Fisher finished with scores of 102 and 99 — adjusting to the greens and stringing together two more good rounds after shaking off a few tough holes.

Parker Williams was the next golfer to finish for the Panthers, turning in rounds of 103 and 99.

“Parker has been our most consistent player this fall and these two rounds are right in line with his whole season,” Hildebrand said. “He’s gotten better every year and he shows up with a great attitude every week.”

Andrew Jones was the final Panther boy, finishing with rounds of 99 and 104 in Buffalo.

Overall the boys’ team finished eighth out of 14 teams in attendance, with Campbell County taking the team title led by Cade Peterson with rounds of 74 and 70.

Powell was able to see 3A East teams such as Douglas and Torrington for the first and only time before the state championships next week.

On the girls’ side, Emery Hernandez finished with rounds of 108 and 117 to lead the way, just ahead of teammate Coy Erickson who had rounds of 119 and 109.

“Both Coy and Emery have a chance to battle for All-Conference honors in Green River,” Hildebrand said.

Erika Cook once again won in Buffalo  with a pair of 71s, while Sheridan won the team title after placing second, third and fourth.

Powell now heads into the postseason, making the trip down to Green River this weekend to take part in the 3A West Conference Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

“Evanston and Lander have kind of shown themselves to be at the top of the west with us, Cody, Lovell and Pinedale battling for those next couple spots,” Hildebrand said.

That will set up the Panthers for the final weekend of the season, heading to Worland for the 3A State Championships on Sept. 15-16.
