Panther golf finishes fourth in Cody invite

After a strong first day of competition at the Cody Invitational, the Panther golf team experienced a slight drop on the second day — falling to fourth place overall in the standings.

Junior Gunnar Erickson continued his strong play from the first day, following up his 86 on the first day with an 87.

After his career best score on Tuesday, junior Will Jackson followed up his 86 with a 92 on Wednesday.

“Will [Jackson] did a very nice job on Wednesday as well,” Panthers golf coach Troy Hildebrand said. “This was his highest finish to date and it was great to see him put two good rounds together again this week.”

Junior Isaiah Woyak followed up his strong 92 on Tuesday with a slightly improved score of 91 on day two.

Hildebrand said that it was good to see Woyak perform better in the Cody tournament after having a few struggles the first week in Powell, and get settled into the scores that are expected of him.

After his score of 92 on Tuesday, junior Andrew Jones fell slightly behind Woyak, finishing with a 96 on the second day of action.

“Andrew [Jones] had a better weekend, but he is still having one or two really tough holes each round that is pushing him from the upper 80s into the mid 90s,” Hildebrand said. “As he gets that solved over the next couple of weeks I think he will drop into the 80s where he finished last fall.”

Sophomore Jackson Hill showed significant improvement from his first day score of 104, dropping 10 strokes and finishing with a 94 on Wednesday.

Hildebrand said that Hill did a good job of bouncing back from a difficult round on Tuesday to finish with a round closer to his average.

Junior Parker Williams had his two best scores to date, finishing with a 106 on the second day after a 101 on day one. Hildebrand said it is nice to see him on a positive trajectory this fall as he begins to improve.

Senior Seth Siebert had a significant drop on Wednesday. After finishing with a 94 on day one, Siebert finished with a 116.

“Seth [Siebert] had a very rough day Wednesday,” Hildebrand said. “Just about everything that could have gone wrong did, and as a senior he will just be looking to use his experience to bounce back from this round moving forward.”

Senior Wesley Preator got his first look at a course on Wednesday, finishing with a 125 in Cody.

On the girls’ side, Coy Erickson followed up her career best performance of 115 on Tuesday with a similar score of 116 on Wednesday.

Hildebrand said that she continues to improve and figure out a little more each tournament round.

A full week of practice is ahead for the Panthers before they head to a one day tournament in Lovell on Friday, first teeing off at 9 a.m.

“Lovell is a good, challenging course for high school players and I look forward to seeing if we can keep improving as we play there,” Hildebrand said.
