Panther golf battles elements in spring season

The short and quick spring golf season saw the Powell Panther golf team battling the elements, competing in four events around the state over April and May.

In the spring, athletes shoot only one round, as the Panthers started out in Worland on April 5.

Leading the way for Powell was Jackson Hill with an 89, while Trey Scott was just one stroke behind with a 90.

Tucker Robinson shot a 111 and Jace Harris shot a 121 to round out the scores for the first tournament.

“I had a small group with just a couple of returning players with varsity experience in Trey Scott and Jackson Hill,” coach Troy Hildebrand said. “Having small numbers allowed us to get some players tournament experience this spring that they traditionally don’t get in the fall when we have a bigger team and the tournaments are more competitive.”

After several weeks off due to weather and few tournaments in the area, the Panthers hosted their own round at the Powell Golf Club on April 26.

Scott led the way this time, taking sixth with an 86, while Hill tied for 18th with a 95.

Julian Frost finished 23rd with a 98, Harris tied for 31st with a 109, Robinson shot a 114 to take 38th, Xander Clark tied for 40th with a 119 and Cole Young shot a 129 to tie for 44th.

Heading over to Cody on May 3, the Panthers battled cold weather at the Olive Glenn Golf Course.

Hill tied for 18th with an 88 while Scott was just behind with a 90 to tie for 23rd.

Frost continued his improvement, finishing with a 92 and tying for 27th. Clark tied for 42nd with a 109, Harris shot a 112 to take 45th, Young shot a 132 to take 50th, Robinson shot a 133 to take 51st and Trystan Preator shot a 138 to take 52nd.

Rounding out the spring season the Panthers made the trip to Lander on May 10.

Scott led with an 85 to tie for ninth, Hill finished with a 91 and to take home 21st, Harris shot a 110 to tie for 37th and Frost shot a 117 to take 40th.

“Jace, Tucker, Julian and Cole are all players that had some previous tournament experience and it was really good for them to get to add to that this spring,” Hildebrand said. “Xander and Trystan each got in their first tournament experience and did a nice job of making the best of it and have some things to work on heading into next fall.”

Hildebrand said Steven Fieber competed in the middle school division in both Powell and Cody, noting that “he will be a nice player in a couple of years when he hits high school.”

He added that with the returning state experience of Scott and Hill along with Cody Fisher, who plays soccer in the spring, the Panthers will still have a couple of spots available for the traveling team heading into the spring.

“As always, spring golf is a nice opportunity to get things moving, but June and July are the two months that these guys will really need to put the time in to be successful for us next fall,” Hildebrand said. “We have a chance to have a very solid team with the returners that we have, and some of these younger guys competing for those final traveling spots.”
