Harvey breaks two school records

Posted

A battle at the 3A West Regional track and field meet in Mountain View saw the Powell Panthers finishing in second place, as Waycee Harvey snapped two records she came close to breaking earlier this season.

The first of those records came in the long jump, as she became the first Panther girl in history to clear 18 feet, finishing in first place by over a foot with a leap of 18 feet, 0 1/2 inches.

That broke the previous record by exactly 1 inch, which was set by Anissa Warner in 2016.

Harvey wasn’t done, claiming sole possession of the school record in the 400 meters with a second place finish in 58.2 seconds on Saturday.

She had tied the previous record of 58.57 at the Wyoming Track Classic earlier this season  originally set by Megan Liner in 2000.

“It was fantastic to see Waycee break the long jump record and win the long jump by over a foot into a headwind with cold and spitting rain,” coach Scott Smith said. “Then on Saturday, coming back and breaking the record she tied earlier in the season in finals was more than anyone can ask for. Waycee is truly a great competitor.”

That 400 meter victory was the only individual win on the weekend for the Panthers, who also had one relay win.

The 4x800 relay team of Kinley Cooley, Karee Cooley, Myah Rakness and Kenna Jacobsen won in 10:13.74 by 19 seconds over the next closest team.

Powell added several new qualifiers who placed in the top eight, adding new marks for Lauryn Bennett in both the 100 meter hurdles (16.82) and the 300 meter hurdles (50.98).

“It was so nice to see Lauryn not only qualify for state in both hurdles, but her prelim times broke 17 (seconds) in the 100 and 50 (seconds) in the 300 hurdles,” Smith said. “Those have been her goals all four years and she has gotten close but it was great to finally break through.”

Additional top eight finishers adding new marks or qualifying for the first time included Charity Siggins in the high jump (4-9) and 100 meter hurdles (17.56), Averie Warner in the 100 meters (13.25), Audrey Johnson in the 400 meters (1:02.84), Myah Rakness in the 800 meters (2:32.9), Brynn Hillman in the 1600 meters (5:51.33) and Kate Williams in the pole vault (8-0).

Powell also added its final relay for the state meet, as the 4x100 relay team of Warner, Ashlee Jacobsen, Naomi Whipple and Johnson finished third (53.63).

The Panthers finished second in a crowded team race, as Worland pulled ahead to snap the four year regional tournament winning streak by the Panthers in the 3A West, totaling 175 points compared to 140 for Powell.

The Panthers finished 15 points ahead of third placed Lander.

STATE MEET

Powell now heads to Casper for the state meet starting Thursday afternoon and concluding Saturday.

The Panthers are the three-time defending champions at the state meet, but expect a tight race as Worland is seeking its first title since 1997 along with Lander seeking its first since 2000.

“Both boys and girls are going into a close battle for trophies this weekend, one of the most even competitions that I’ve seen in years,” Smith said.

Powell won last year by 2.5 points over the Warriors, with those three teams, Mountain View and 3A East winner Buffalo expected to be in the mix for trophies.
