Panther girls' hoops, wrestlers remain atop 3A rankings

PHS, at 7-0, receives 15 of 17 first place votesThe Powell High School Panthers continue to hold down the number one ranking in the final batch of 2009 rankings released by Wyopreps.com. The top five polls are conducted among coaches and statewide media. Powell, which has either shared or outright held the No. 1 ranking since the pre-season in girls' 3A basketball, received 15 out of 17 first-place votes in the latest batch of rankings. Cross-county rival Cody, which breaks for the holidays boasting an 8-0 record, received one vote as the state's best 3A squad. Buffalo, at 3-3 and coming off a loss at Powell, received the other first-place vote.

In all, Powell received 237 points in the latest tally. Trailing the Panthers in the polls are Cody (201 points), Buffalo (129), Lander (96) and Mountain View (48). The top four teams remained unchanged from the previous poll.

Eleven of the 16 teams in Class 3A received votes in the latest girls' poll.

The final 3A boys' basketball poll of 2009 shows Buffalo, at 4-2 this season, continuing to hold the top spot after receiving 10 of 15 first-place votes. The Bison earned 198 points in all.

Rounding out the top five are Torrington (6-1, 183 points), Worland (5-1, 129), Jackson (4-4, 90) and Douglas (6-2, 66). Rawlins and Thermopolis also received votes this week.

In wrestling, the Panthers remain atop the WyoWrestling.com rankings, as they have since the preseason. Douglas, Worland, Wheatland, Torrington and Lander trail Powell in the top six.

Individually, Powell has a number of wrestlers ranked in the top six of their weight classes, including four grapplers currently ranked No. 1.

Olie Olson (130 pounds), Colt Nix (135), Trent Gillett (145) and Joe Lujan (215) currently lead the charts for the Panthers. Other ranked PHS wrestlers include Charels Wittick (second at 103), Luke Wozney (second at 112), Jessee Craig (second at 119), Drew Feller (sixth at 119), Zach Thiel (fourth at 125), Randy Andrews (second at 140), Waylon Bays (fifth at 145), Luke Cannon (third at 152), Cole Kary (fourth at 152), Jimmy Seckman (second at 160), Monte Nickles (third at 171), Devin Jordan (fourth at 189), Kurt Bullinger (sixth at 215) and Trevor Griffith (sixth at 285).
