PAC Triathlon enjoys strong weekend

Competitors of all ages show up

Competitors of all ages from around the region flocked to Powell on Saturday to compete in the 13th annual Powell Aquatic Center Triathlon.

“Our numbers are pretty small compared to most,” PAC co-director Tanya Bonner said. It’s the beginning of the triathlon season, and many people are getting back into it. We’ve always been a very laid back and fun event so it’s a good way to ease yourself back in. This year we had one more solo registration than last year bringing it to 18 soloists and five teams.”

Leading the way and winning overall for the second year in a row for the women’s division was Powell’s Kinley Bollinger, who finished in 1 hour and 12 minutes flat to take first place in the 20 and under division as well as overall.

Dan Lavy of Laurel won the men’s division for the second year in a row, finishing in 1:10.4 to claim the overall title as well as the men’s 26-30 year old category.

Both had improvements over last year’s time of about four minutes.

WOMEN’S RESULTS

Just behind Bollinger was Sarah Spini, who placed second overall and in the 20 and under division, finishing in 1:22.28.

Just behind Spini was Melissa Merritt, who finished third in the 20 and under division and third overall with a 1:29.54.

Kerrie Spinney won the 36-40-year-old division, finishing fourth overall with a time of 1:40.47.

Kristin Thompson was just behind her, winning the 41-45 year old division with a time of 1:41.28.

Alexi Payne won the women’s 21-25-year-old division, finishing in 1:51.24.

Anna O’Donnell was second in the 41-45-year-old division with a 1:52.57, while Sydney Horton was second in the 21-25 year old division and finished in 1:54.34.

MEN’S RESULTS

Second overall for the men’s division was Ladell Merritt, who finished in 1:12.45 to win the men’s 51-59-year-old division.

Just behind Merritt was Arthur Thompson, who won the men’s 41-45-year-old division in 1:13.01.

Tom Holt was second in the 51-59-year-old division, finishing in 1:23.22.

Jon Hawley won the 20 and under division, finishing in 1:33.52.

Hunter Christner was second in the men’s 26-30-year-old division, finishing in 1:38.11.

Just behind Christner was the oldest competitor in the field, as John Housel finished in 1:41.4 to win the 70-plus division.

“John Housel, now he’s a legend,” Bonner said. “This man has been competing for years and not just in the PAC tri. He’s a beast on the bike and pretty quick on his feet for 71. He’s also an avid skier, so basically a fitness fanatic.”

Andrew Sturges won the men’s 31-35-year-old division in 1:44.28.

Josh Spinney finished in 1:50.27 to win the men’s 36-40-year-old division.

Rounding out the competition was 10-year-old Tobyn Jordan, who became the youngest competitor to ever complete the triathlon — finishing in 1:53.31.

“Tobyn is the youngest soloist we’ve had compete since we started this,” Bonner said. “He’s a member of the Powell Swim Club, it was nice to see the other athletes give him such encouragement.”

TEAM RESULTS

Overall in the team race, the trio of Jake, Bridget and Adam Williams won the Co-Ed division, finishing in 1:21.15.

Just behind them overall was the team of Bonner, Tim Baxter and Rinda Eastman which took second in Co-Ed with a 1:23.26.

Winning the men’s division  was the team of Gabe Rose, Erik Olson and Jerry Rodriguez in 1:24.55.
