The Northwest College Foundation has been working to raise $3.5 million as part of a capital campaign to go to the new student center construction.
Going into the NWC Giving Day event last week, the foundation was still more than $700,000 short. However, a line in the Legislature’s approved and signed budget will enable the foundation to easily clear that goal and more.
“We are super excited and we will have an action item on the board agenda for them to approve the funds as designated match funds to be used by the foundation,” NWC President Lisa Watson said. “We will draw down the funds as soon as possible and work to be at the table for an additional $1.3 million that will be available after the $1 million is matched.”
She said the $1 million will be granted to the college up front, while the $1.3 million balance will likely be divided between the community colleges to ensure each one has equal access to funds.
“Still, it’s a great opportunity for the community colleges to strengthen their endowments through community support and matching funds,” Watson said. “The university asks and gets these funds almost every year. The [community colleges] should also advocate for this benefit to build scholarships and campus support through the foundations.”
The new student center is scheduled to be completed in late fall.
