Northrup comeback: In a new district, former legislator wins big

David Northrup, Willwood farmer and former legislator, is about to drop the “former.”

He is on the way to becoming Rep. David Northrup again.

The former three-term member of the House of Representatives in HD 50 emerged a big winner as the Republican nominee for State Representative in Tuesday voting in House District 25. Northrup had a winning margin of over 500 votes in moving on to the November general election where he is presently unopposed.

Northrup lost a 2020 bid to move to the State Senate in a SD 18 election won by Tim French.

Northrup’s Willwood farming area was in HD 50 which stretches west from Powell to Cody until redistricting by the 2022 Legislature moved the Willwood area from HD 50 to HD 25. He didn’t hesitate in filing for the Powell seat.

He was rewarded Tuesday. Northrup’s tally of 1,164 votes dominated a four-person race, with businessman Chris Good second with 663 votes. Rex Rich finished third with 537 votes and Troy Bray trailed with 470.

“I am very honored to be able to serve the people of the Powell area,” Northrup said Wednesday. “My opponents ran a very clean race, and I thank them for that.”

Northrup served for four years as chairman of the House Education Committee in Cheyenne, and he is looking forward to putting in for an assignment on education again.

His two most important issues are doing something to rein in the dramatic increase in property taxes and to find more stable funding sources for education. He particularly took note of community colleges providing more career and technical education, “and yet they’re not getting any kind of funding from the state for CTE. That needs to change.”
