With the recent departure of Kury Reynolds as the head golf professional at the Powell Golf Club, a short search ended with Doug Firth taking over the position at the start of December.
Firth comes to Powell from the Lander Golf Course, where he had been the golf pro for eight years. He also brings a wealth of experience from past courses spread throughout Wyoming and Utah.
“I have been involved in golf as long as I can remember,” Firth said.
Coming into the Powell position, Firth is hoping to carry on what Reynolds has done to help grow the club; the course experienced a financial turnaround over the last 10 years, and has posted two straight years of profit.
One way Firth is hoping to grow the club is by bringing in a golf simulator. Setting one up at the clubhouse would help local golfers work on their swings, especially in winter, and allow the pro to see up close what a person’s swing and shot are doing off the tee.
“I think simulators are invaluable in teaching,” Firth said.
Another element Firth plans to bring is a different personality, along with his hands-on work ethic. He intends to go around and help everybody as much as he can and not be in the background.
Firth said he knows that Reynolds left him in a great position, and he wants to carry on the progress at the course.
Another good reason for Firth’s move to Powell was the fact that he has a large number of relatives living in the area, and he’s hoping to finish out his golf career here.
Firth was introduced to the Powell Golf Club Board of Directors on Dec. 14, and introduced to club members at an event on Dec. 17.
