Make-A-Wish fundraising is at nearly $8,000 and far from over

This year’s Make-A-Wish week at Powell High School overflowed with whipped cream, musical chairs and cash.

Within the week Powell High School raised $7,902.

For the past week the school has engaged in its annual Make-A-Wish week, and heading into Friday the students had already raised roughly $4,500. In order to reach this high amount the student council sent a fundraising toilet from classroom to classroom. Students and staff had to pay for the toilet to be removed and could pay extra to have the toilet removed permanently or sent to a classroom of their choice. Student council also put on a  minute-to-win-it fundraiser Wednesday and pay-to-play dodgeball tournament on Thursday, as well as multiple fundraising events for the assembly and basketball games.

By the end of the day Friday, which featured the annual assembly, the students had raised $1,192 through T-shirt sales and assembly earnings. From the assembly $917 was raised through a pay-to-play game of musical chairs, pass the bucket and the auctioning off of a detention pass, along with the parking spots of student council president Sydney Spomer and vice president Anna Bartholomew.

But the crowd really came alive when pairs of teachers were called out. During the week students donated money to one teacher of each pair who they wanted to see get a pie to the face. The losing teachers were Troy Hildebrand, Brandon Preator, Kaitlin Loeffen, Charli Fluty and Nick Fulton. Fluty and Fulton were tied so both teachers could be enthusiastically pied by their first born child. Special education teacher Steve Whipple was pied in a last minute surprise attack by student body secretary Hannah Sears.

During the Powell vs. Worland basketball games on Friday an additional $2,621 was raised through a 50/50 raffle, silent auction and half-time free throw shoot. The silent auction accounted for nearly half of that night’s total.

Members of the public can still get in on making a difference through a Gunwerks raffle that is open until Feb. 24. The winner of the raffle gets a two-day, level one Long Range Ballistics class in Burlington — only 100 tickets are available at $25 each. At Powell Middle School, Make-A-Wish week is beginning this week with dress up days. Staff can pay $5 to wear blue jeans and students can pay $1 to wear a hat. Coins for Kids donations are taking place  Feb 13-17 in students’ home rooms.
