Locals to donate bison hunt to Purple Heart combat veteran

Posted

Powell resident and professional hunter Ken Klemm, Command Sgt. Maj. Dale Veneklasen, Ret., and an anonymous donor, will host Vietnam War Purple Heart recipient and local resident Sgt. Larry Baker (U.S. Army, retired) and treat him to an authentic, spot-and-stalk bison hunt on private land west of Meeteetse. This annual wounded warrior hunt will be provided free of charge for Baker. Wyoming Legacy Meats and Nature’s Design Taxidermy, both of Cody, have also offered their services free of charge.

Baker was seriously wounded in Vietnam on May 1, 1968, as he served as infantry squad leader when he encountered a booby trap while searching out enemy tunnels and was seriously injured by the blast. After many decades of suffering from memory loss and other ailments, Baker began to find peace and help as he reached out to fellow veterans and others for help.

“We’re pleased to put together this 5th Annual Purple Heart recipient hunt in an all-new location and with some new partners,” Klemm said. “It’s a real joy and a privilege to be able to give back to our troops in a meaningful way — especially those who served in Vietnam and were poorly treated upon their return so long ago. We understand how ethical hunting and time in nature can help heal the soul and we are so glad that we are able to provide this hunt for Larry.”

Those wishing to thank this brave warrior for his service are invited to share a Dutch-treat social and dinner with Baker and his sponsors on Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at The Irma in Cody. Those so inclined, can order dinner for themselves or even just stop by and offer their simple heartfelt expressions of gratitude for this man’s service.

Klemm has worked closely with his friend Veneklasen, vice president/founder of the all-volunteer Rocky Mountain Heroes Foundation (rmheroes.org), to organize and execute this hunt. Veneklasen served in the 101st Calvary unit, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, in many deployments and is himself a highly decorated veteran with four Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. The American Buffalo is central to his past unit’s military culture and these hunts always provide a special significance to him. Veneklasen makes his home near Ft. Carson, Colorado, and now dedicates his time to helping wounded warriors integrate into society.

Also assisting with organizing the hunt is Brian “Sol” Soliday, president/founder of the all-volunteer Rocky Mountain Heroes Foundation. His help has proven invaluable to provide additional funding and support to complete this experience for Baker.
