Local students shine in Farm Bureau contest

Powell students saw great success in a trio of contests hosted by the Park County Farm Bureau.

As part of the Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation’s annual “Ag Books for Kids” program, some 600 elementary school students in Powell and Cody participated in coloring, poster and marketing contests. They were based around this year’s ag book, titled, “Popcorn Country: The Story of America’s Favorite Snack.”

Parkside Elementary School fifth-grader Blayke Tharp won the marketing ad contest in both Park County and the district, which encompasses the Big Horn Basin and Fremont County. Tharp’s ad — which earned her a large pizza and a personal pan — featured a picture of a friendly tub of popcorn below the text, “Do you like pop and do you like corn[?] then you are interested in popcorn.”

Mary Block, who helped oversee the contest for the Park County Farm Bureau, said there were many creative submissions.

“We had some real comedians,” Block said, adding, “Some of them had really good dad jokes.”

Melody Forsman, a first-grader at Westside Elementary, similarly took home a pair of pizzas after winning the coloring competition at the county and district levels.

Meanwhile, Southside Elementary third-grader Eden Hite submitted the county’s best poster to earn a personal pan. He also took place at the district level.

Block expressed appreciation for those who participated in and assisted with the contest, singling out Park County School District 1 Elementary Librarian Jesse Otto in Powell and Eastside Elementary School Administrative Assistant Afton Grant in Cody.
